Income Tax Preparation

We can prepare and file personal tax returns for individuals living in all province and territories, as well as non-residents who must file a Canadian tax return. We use one of Canada’s leading tax preparation programs, and CCRA’s electronic filing system for professionals. The only returns we do not prepare are those for individuals in bankruptcy (these are normally prepared by the bankruptcy trustee).

Internally, we distinguish two broad types of tax returns; the distinction is largely designed to facilitate billing practices.

Basic Tax Returns

A ‘basic’ tax return is any return compiled entirely from information slips provided by third parties. Third party slips include all T-slip (T4, T5, T3, etc), RRSP contributions, charitable donation, child care expenses, and medical expenses. Tuition and education amounts, disability credits, and claims for supporting dependants are also considered ‘basic’ services. Where these amounts are derived in whole or in part from another individual’s tax return (i.e. child, dependant parent, etc) we expect to prepare these related returns as well.

Basic tax preparation services require the mechanical compilation of information using the correct CCRA forms; calculations include maximizing deductions/credits within the prescribed limitations. Basic tax services focus on accurate and timely filing of the tax return, properly documenting the amounts reported, and identifying obvious opportunities for reducing tax liability or improving administration of one’s tax affairs.

Complex Tax Returns

A ‘complex’ tax return is any return that reports information not provided in finished form by third parties. This includes self-employment (business, commission, professionals, farming & fishing), rental properties, employment expenses, capital gains & losses, and foreign income taxes.

Individuals who derive any part of their income from these sources, must maintain detailed records of revenues and expenses. For each activity, including related business use of automobile and home expenses, you must keep records to support income invoiced, collected and deposited, expenses incurred and paid, and business use of personal assets.

Compiling and summarizing such information for use in preparing tax returns is a bookkeeping service. For clients who wish to summarize the source information themselves (to reduce costs) we can provide a simple form and guidance on what to compile. From the completed summary of each business, employment or rental activity, we will prepare the required CCRA forms within the income tax return. In doing so, we ensure the tax regulations are properly applied to the clients best advantage.
